Experimental and
collective art
that enhances connection.
Karin Verbru
About
Karin Verbru is an artist that specializes in interdisciplinary experimental arts, collective processes, and the use of organic materials in painting. Her work is characterized by intermediality, often blending painting, photography, video, and performance to weave rich narratives. Karin’s academic background includes studies in Literature in UNAM and short studies in Documentary Film at the Academy of Arts of San Carlos and Cinematography at the National School of Cinematic Arts (ENAC) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
With over four years of experience in international documentary and artistic projects, Karin exhibited for the first time her photographs and paintings in Ireland in 2023 in the Stendhal Arts Festival. One of her longer projects, Doors Around the Globe, took her on a three-year journey across the world, documenting cultural encounters through collaborative murals in the shape of doors that reflect local stories and histories.
Karin’s most recent work is the documentary Rastros, created in collaboration with over 20 women, exploring the themes of memory, the body, and the power of mapping and art to uncover the traces of life’s experiences. This work is accompanied by an exhibition about the importance of touch regarding breast cancer at the Women’s Museum in Mexico City, where she presented an installation titled El Rastro del Tacto (The Trace of Touch). The piece dialogues with the documentary by showcasing fabrics imprinted with the processes of women exploring their bodies.
Among other collaborative projects is her participation in the Lo Mon Contemporáneo art residency in Spain, where she collaborated as an assistant to artist Laura Quintanilla in the process of creating a project called Convergencias. During this residency, she worked on creating a mural based on conversations and encounters with the inhabitants of a village in the Pyrenees and shared it through a perfomatic encounter through music and poetry.
Additionally, Karin published a photo book titled De barro es mi mirada, tejido mi recuerdo (My Gaze is Made of Clay, My Memory is Woven), which features photographs from the *Rastros* documentary. The book was created in collaboration with photographers Brianda Suárez and Joanna Książkiewicz.
In addition to her artistic practice, Karin has contributed to arts and society through various projects at Radio Nopal since 2020, focusing on the intersection of culture, social issues, and artistic expression. As she puts it: “If there are three words that could describe my artistic view, they would be: interdisciplinary collective exploration.”
Born in 1997 in Mexico City, Karin Verbru continues to develop her artistic career with a global perspective, drawing from her diverse experiences and a strong commitment to exploring human processes in collectivity with organic materials, and a strong focus on the connection in between through wild experimentation encounters.
That art that brings people together, opens doors and expands the contact with nature is my passion.
All my projects share three key elements: they involve collective participation, they push the boundaries of traditional art and disciplines, and they aim to deepen our connection with whatever we are doing: may it be with nature, with each other, with our bodies, with our culture.
Project by the numbers.
